For the Social Studies Class Back at Home (#2)

Updated from last post ...

These are for the children back home ... all of these questions come directly from my experiences in India these past 24-hours.

1. Which side of the road do they drive in India?
(once you have the correct answer ... then consider where the driver's seat is ... )

They drive on the left side of the road in India. I suppose that this is a legacy from the British. So that means that the driver seat is on the right-hand side ... opposite of ours in the US. And since most cars are stick-shifts, your shifting hand is your left.

2. Mumbai used to be more commonly called a different name? What was it?
(While in Mumbai, I always heard of it referred to as Mumbai. But outside of Mumbai, I have heard others use its former name)

It used to be called Bombay. It is a very large city right on the west coast of India. And it is more humid that you can imagine! By the time I was done walking through the airport (no air conditioning) I had sweat through all of my clothes .... shirt and jeans.
Where I am now, in Pune, is much drier. I'm much more comfortable.

3. I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Pune. All three of us ordered something different from the menu. When the food was being served ... how do you think it was served to us?
(remember that in the USA, everyone gets his or her own plate placed in front of them ... things are different in India)

We were each given a plate, and then all the food we ordered was placed in the center of the table. The wait staff then gave us portions from each dish that was ordered. It is customary to share food in this way ...
